Laser Hair Removal - Is It Safe? Are all Lasers the Same?

Authentic Woman Magazine (IL) January/February 2008

Are you looking for a convenient alternative to shaving, waxing or plucking unwanted hair? Good news! Safe and effective hair removal is available for all skin types.

All lasers are not the same. It is important to get all the information before getting started. The latest laser technology offers specific wavelengths that are best suited for different skin types. Chic Med Spa utilizes state of the art equipment to optimize the treatment outcomes.

Alexandrite (affectionately known as the "Alex") is the "gold standard" for individuals with fair complexion, light hair, and light eyes (typically considered skin types I, II or III). Chic Medspa also specializes in providing laser hair removal and spa treatments for skin types IV and beyond, that is, for persons of olive tone skin and darker. The Nd:YAG used at the Chic Med Spa is the "gold standard" for tanned, Hispanic, Asian or darker skin. The FDA has approved these lasers for permanent hair reduction.

How does it work?

The laser emits a beam of light that is attracted to the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle. Specific wavelength at pre-determined pulse duration and energy settings are directed at and absorbed by the actively growing hair follicles, disabling the growth of the hair follicles, resulting in quick safe and effective hair removal.

How effective is this hair removal technology?

You can expect permanent hair reduction. On average there is 80% hair reduction after just 4 treatments. Individual results may vary depending on hair or skin type, certain medications and different hormone levels. Some hair follicles that are dormant at the time of the treatment may start growing at a later date due to stress levels, certain medications and different hormone levels. Most of our patient's require 5-6 treatments provided the recommended treatment schedule is followed. Some individuals will require fewer treatments and some will require more treatments depending on the results desired.

When is a good time to start? It is advisable to avoid sun exposure before and after laser treatments (especially with the Alexandrite). If sun exposure is unavoidable use a minimum sunscreen of SPF 30 (UVA/UVB). Winter months are the best time because most people have reduced sun exposure in the winter.

Is it affordable? The cost of laser hair removal depends on the size of the area being treated. For example, single treatment of the upper lip costs $99 and full arms cost $349. Special promotions, discounted packages and care credit financing are available at Chic Med Spa and can be customized to your personal needs and budgets. We match any competitor's published promotion or price.*

What are the other laser treatments beside hair removal? Chic Med Spa also offers laser treatment for spider veins on the face or legs, LaserFACIAL and treatment for sun damage or pigmented lesions.

How do I schedule the initial consultation? Chic Med Spa offers a complimentary initial consultation and evaluation by our board certified physician. This gives you an opportunity to get the information you need.
