Safe Tanning: The Ultimate Win/Win

The nice weather can have every woman yearning for that healthy, natural glow. However, while that perfect tan can transform a woman into a beach goddess straight out of Baywatch, the sun’s harmful side effects are no secret. Deadly skin cancer, accelerated aging, and painful burns threaten to put a damper on your summer fun. So how do you get that elusive glow while staying safe and avoiding looking like the 8th cast member on Jersey Shore? Here are a few helpful tips:
For instant, even color, go with an airbrush or spray tan. Though there are some very effective at home tanning kits, a salon is preferable for beginners. The specialists at the salon can advise you what color to choose with your skin color to avoid looking too orange or too dark.
At home treatments such as self-tanners and bronzers can also be very effective. Make sure to apply small, natural-looking amounts and allow plenty of time to dry when using self-tanner. Stick to proven brands such as St. Tropez or Jergens. Bronzer, which can be found in almost any brand of skincare, can be an effective addition to your every day makeup routine.
To extend the life of your tan using any of these treatments, remember to exfoliate before and moisturize after application.
Though tempting sometimes, remember that tanning beds are just as dangerous as the sun’s harmful rays. Also, avoid using tanning pills. These contain the unsafe chemical, canthaxanthin, which hasn’t been approved by the FDA and can cause harmful side effects.
Most importantly, make the most of all your work spent safely tanning by frequently applying sunscreen while out in the sun and using an everyday moisturizer that contains SPF. Follow these tips for a radiant, healthy, and beautiful summer!
