Personal Trainer Taking You from Resolution to Results!

Forsyth Woman Magazine (NC) Jan 2012

As we look to the New Year, many of us make the same resolution we did previous year - “I’m going to start exercising and get healthy!” With intentions high, we may find our resolution is easier said than done.  To get you the results you want, it’s about eating (yes, eating, not starving) yourself thin and about getting stronger through resistance training.  Getting you set up on a proper eating plan and exercise program, and then keeping you accountable and on track, is where Cory Silva, personal trainer, enters your journey to a healthier you!
Eating Gives Fuel for the Body
Dieting or establishing a new eating program is a good start to losing weight, but to completely stop giving your body the fuel it needs to function on a day to day basis is not the way to be healthy and physically fit.  “Never buy into the misconception that not eating will help you to lose weight.  Even though you may see the scale fall a couple of pounds in the first few days, the simple truth is that the body needs food.  You have to remember that what you eat, how much you eat and how often are three areas that need to be controlled in order to have a healthy diet and, in turn, lose weight. A good balance of protein and carbohydrates is important at each meal. When you skip meals, your metabolism, which helps in burning calories, actually slows down and leads to faster weight gain.  The body ‘thinks’ it might not get food, so it goes into a starvation mode, and holds on to what it does get,” said Silva.
Resistance Training Gets You Stronger, Leaner and Healthier
Although you may think that the best way to lose weight is to hit the treadmill or elliptical a few times a week, actually getting in some resistance, or weight training, can do your body a world of good in many areas.  “Resistance or weight training has a reputation for being a ‘guy’ thing, but it is important to everyone; people of any age can benefit from weight training.  With a regular resistance training program, you can reduce your body fat, increase your lean muscle mass, strengthen your bones and burn calories more efficiently,” Silva noted.
Some areas that Silva says are directly affected through resistance training are:

  • Where women are concerned, weight bearing exercises increase bone density and the risks of osteoporosis can be reduced.
  • Gaining muscle means your body can burn more calories, more efficiently.
  • Strong muscles help protect your joints from injury and can be linked to establishing better balance.
  • Resistance training also helps give your stamina a boost, meaning you won’t fatigue as easily.

“Everyone wants immediate results, but there is no one workout that will work for everyone; no magic pill, magic diet or special drink.  Because everyone has a different body type, designing a proper workout for an individual is critical in getting the desired results.  I incorporate circuit training with low weight and high reps, covering your cardio and your resistance training all in one, and for some people, free weights are our focus.  As I work with my clients, I take every aspect of their lives into consideration, like daily activity, diet, body type; all those things in each person’s life that may have contributed to where they are now and why they are wanting to change.  From there, we work together to develop an exercise program and eating plan to get them healthier and stronger in the year to come,” said Silva.
