Diagnosing Sleep Disorders
How do I know if I have a sleep disorder? Many people assume as they get older, they do not require as much sleep or they settle for a lesser quality of sleep. Awakening in the morning still feeling sleepy and unrefreshed is one of the primary signs of a sleep disorder. There are over 80 different sleep disorders. Many times it is the patient’s bed partner who first notices something unusual happening during sleep.
Symptoms of a sleep disorder may include loud snoring interrupted by pauses or gasps during breathing, morning headaches, struggling to stay awake during the day, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, kicking or body jerking during sleep, or uncomfortable feelings in the legs when resting (especially at night). All of these symptoms prevent a person from getting the rest they need. A sleep physician has received specialized training to evaluate, diagnose and treat sleep How disorders. The physician should be Board Certified (DABSM or FAASM) or Board Eligible in Sleep Medicine. When you visit a sleep physician, you will be asked extensive questions regarding your sleep problems and sleep history. If appropriate, specialized sleep testing will be ordered. The sleep test should always be performed by trained sleep technologists, who are either Registered or Registry Eligible.
Once the sleep study is performed, it is reviewed in depth by the sleep physician, who can correctly recognize and interpret the sleep study, as well as determine the proper treatment for any sleep disorder present. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recognizes sleep centers meeting their high practice standards as “Nationally Accredited”.
