How Would You Spell Relief?
Pain. Hurt. Ache. As children we are taught not to use 4-letter words! But these 4-letter words - pain, hurt, ache - are ones that adults often use when describing how they feel. Roger Porter, patent holder of an innovative laser therapy, knows how to eliminate not just these words, but the awful feelings of pain, hurt and ache; he would spell relief as CuraeLase.
In 2005 Roger Porter and his wife had tried every mainline and experimental method of medicine to help her severe rheumatoid arthritis. Nothing worked. Porter, a bio-medical engineer who attended Clemson University learned of a doctor in Birmingham, AL who was using low level laser treatments to help patients. Believing that there is “always a better mouse trap” Roger began working with laser physics to deliver 12-25,000 laser jewels without damaging a single cell. He had to go to Toronto, Canada to find a company who could build the first machine that had the laser beam made to the 10 parameter specs Porter required. Today he orders parts from across the world and assembles them in his home town of Loris, SC.
Frank G. McArthur, MD in Birmingham, AL, arranged to have the first 20 patients test the laser therapy. Without exception all 20 reported a decrease to elimination of their pain. Porter filed for FDA approval on November 15, 2005 and was granted approval on December 12, 2005; 23 days – a true miracle. The approval classification of non-significant risk means there are no known adverse reactions. To date, more than 5000 patients have been helped; many coming from across the nation to Myrtle Beach to avail themselves of what they consider a last-ditch effort to control their pain. They quickly learn how effective the CuraeLase therapy is. Frank Porter says, “Patients come in crying and go out crying – coming in with severe pain, leaving with little or none.”
Lasers have been used in medicine for decades for such things as cutting, cauterizing, or heating tissue. The CuraeLase laser is unique because while powerful to penetrate up to 5 inches into the body, it is gentle enough to avoid tissue damage. It uses a warm laser light that is painless; it delivers a unique wavelength that delivers photons to the cells in deep tissue. This, in turn, decreases inflammation and edema, thereby reducing pain in swollen joints and tissue. By decreasing inflammation, increasing blood flow, permeability of cells and neurological activity, the laser treatment promotes tissue regeneration and mostly significantly – reduces pain!
CuraeLase is most commonly used on patients with fibromyalgia, knee, back and shoulder pain and diabetes related problems. Recently a patient with severe diabetic numbness was able to feel the floor with the bottom of her feet after just one treatment. Other conditions that can be treated are plantar fasciitis, golf/tennis elbow, cold sores/herpes, neck and back pain, carpal tunnel pain and migraine headaches. Cervical radiculitis, stenosis and spondylosis also respond as do DJD and lumbar radiculitis. For some conditions, the pain is resolved or significantly reduced immediately after the first treatment; others may take multiple treatments before results are apparent. Severe chronic conditions do take longer than acute conditions to note improvement. A CuraeLase doctor evaluates and prescribes the appropriate treatment. Initial consultations are free.
CuraeLase therapy is a new treatment modality that most insurance companies do not cover at this time. Based on similar situations with new innovations such as MRI scanning, it is felt it is only a matter of time before insurance companies embrace this technology. In the meantime, many patients find that their pain medication use is significantly decreased after therapy, making CuraeLase cost effective.
The goal of CuraeLase laser therapy is to resolve your pain and promote actual tissue healing; giving pain relief that lasts indefinitely. There are no harmful side effects to laser treatments and it is noninvasive and nonsurgical. It may also decrease medication.
For Frank Porter’s wife, CuraeLase laser therapy gave her back the ability to dance and go horseback riding. Unfortunately, she danced out of his life leaving him single with 3 children and 7 grandchildren.
Today, Porter is answering the many requests to franchise this modality treatment; in November 2011 he flew to Houston, TX to open the first one. He sees this eventually going global as there are people in pain who cannot travel to Myrtle Beach to be helped. And although in his words he would “rather be treating patients and making them well” he recognizes the need and benefit of opening up CuraeLase Centers in other parts of the United States and world to reach those living in pain.
