How To Spring Clean Your Life
Soul Detox This inner clearing first involves getting real about what does and doesn’t work in your life and performing what I refer to in my book, Spiritual Fitness, as a “Soul Detox”. Begin your soul detox by asking who and what bring out the best in you? What is the ideal environment for you to thrive in? Just as plants have optimum conditions for growth, we too respond to people, places and situations by either flourishing or wilting. When was the last time you felt truly alive? What makes you feel most nurtured, empowered or at peace? Until you understand what truly works for you, it’s very difficult to gain any level of self-mastery over your life. Make a list of all the circumstances that enhance your well-being and make a conscious decision to discipline yourself to create more of these and eliminate those which affect you adversely.
We also facilitate the detox process by being vigilant about our beliefs. Take a look at the area of your life working least right now and rate yourself out of ten for it. Next, ask yourself how this area of your life would look if it were a top scoring ’ten out of ten’. This can be an interesting exercise because so often we live lives of dissatisfaction and resignation without even considering how things could be better. Next, look at whatever negative beliefs you hold which my be creating your less than perfect experience. Your beliefs are a powerful factor in your experiences of life. This is because each positive or negative belief creates a thought. That thought in turn produces an action and that action becomes an experience. If, for example, you have a belief that love hurts, you’ll think fearful thoughts about your partner, act defensively or aggressively and end up causing conflict or abandonment in your relationship. This will in turn compound your original belief that love hurts!
The Healing Power of Forgiveness The solution is to trace back your negative beliefs to the time when you first took them on. Pinpoint the situation(s) that created them and examine how they were the result of ’mistaken’ thinking either by you, someone else or both. ’Mistaken thinking’ is anything that closes our hearts and makes us buy into the fear-based behaviors and sense of separation that pervade this world. Try viewing this situation instead as the beginning of your soul’s assignment here on earth, to learn how to stay connected to your source at all times and always bring everything back to love and understanding, which in turn produce forgiveness.
Finally, create a new belief based on love not fear, which calls from you your most noble self and your most courageous heart. The most healing action we can take for ourselves and others is to forgive, which means recognizing that beyond any negative action is someone who has lost their way and is reaching out, in however distorted a fashion, for us to witness their pain. By setting them free, we also set ourselves free to allow new life, love and happiness to enter into our lives.
