Power of the Purse Women open their pocketbooks so children can open books

If there’s one thing that Rochester women do especially well, it’s collectively helping others and having a splendid time while doing it. On June 16, the Kahler Grand Hotel will be buzzing with hundreds of women as they share a few of their favorite things delicious food, purse shopping, an inspiring speaker and a worthy cause. Open Your Purse for a Great Cause “Power of the Purse is a great way to bring women together to meet a need that has been identified in our community, which is preparing children for kindergarten,” says Bonnie Schultz, Leadership and Planned Giving Associate for the United Way of Olmsted County. More than 5,300 youngsters in Olmsted County find one brand-new book in their mailboxes every month. The United Way has partnered with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to provide sturdy, colorful, age-appropriate books for children who are registered with the program until they reach age 5. The magic begins with the first book’s arrival, which is the classic “The Little Engine That Could.” Families are encouraged to read the books with their children to encourage the development of skills and foster an enjoyment of reading. Brenda Berg, Power of the Purse co-chair, was curious about the program when the Women’s Leadership Council first began to explore the opportunity. “At first I didn’t understand the need,” says Berg. “I was always surrounded by books as a child and my own children have always had books. That’s when it really hit me some people don’t.” Dolly Parton has established this opportunity for all children, regardless of their parents’ income. “They’ve found that educated, affluent parents may not necessarily be buying books for their children. Instead, they might buy a Game Boy,” explains Berg. There’s power in a group of women who feel passionate about their community. More than 530 attended Power of the Purse last year. “It’s beautifully done,” Berg says. “The wonderful salad, delicious desserts, flowers on the table with gift bags the shape of purses, women sharing stories, and the enthusiasm from the speaker.” Catherine Clinton, professor and chair at Queen’s University Belfast, is this year’s keynote speaker. As the author of “Mrs. Lincoln: a Life,” Clinton will highlight the tragic dimensions of Mrs. Lincoln’s role and legacy as the first “First Lady.” “Mrs. Lincoln had more of an impact on her husband’s career than she was given credit for,” says Schultz. “We believe that Catherine Clinton will share a very timely and meaningful presentation.” What’s Your Style? If it’s true that there’s a perfect purse for every woman, it can likely be found at this auction. The category “Designer’s Choice” proudly displays an electric purple Victor Alfaro tote valued at $180. The other end of the price spectrum, with a value of $12 and in the category titled “Can’t Start ’Em Too Young,” offers a baby girl’s first purse complete with a plush toy cell phone and lipstick. A purse detailed with white lace and beads bears a striking resemblance to a brassiere, because that’s exactly what it used to be. At a value of $20, this creation finds a home in the category, “You Made That From What?” Purses for the silent auction are donated from across the country. “They may come from Iowa or New York,” says Shultz. “The value is listed on all of them and bids start at half-price. Last year we had over 200 purses.” To learn more about Power of the Purse, to view some of the fabulous purses that will be available for bidding, or to register: uwolmsted.org or Bonnie Schultz, 507-287-2000.
