How Do I Choose the Best Lawyer for Me?

By Jessica L. Singer, Esq,

At some point in your life it is likely you will need the services of a lawyer. Whether it is the simple drawing of a Will or a daunting ordeal such as divorce, lawyers are the connection between the judicial world and the world of lay people and can assist you through these situations. Choosing the right attorney is often an intimidating task. The following helpful tips may assist you through this process.

Once you have decided that you do need the assistance of a lawyer, you need to determine which kind of lawyer you need. Since most lawyers specialize in one or more fields of law, you want to identify your type of problem so you may find a lawyer in that field. Is it a family law or divorce problem? Have you been injured? Are you planning for your retirement? Make sure to ask any lawyer what their specialties are and if they have experience in the particular area of law in which you seek representation. Listen to referrals from friends and family, but be sure the person is also a good fit for you and your needs. If a good friend of yours has used a particular attorney and she sings her high praises, that is a great place to start, but if you meet this same attorney and just do not feel a connection, listen to your gut and keep looking. Depending upon the type of legal issue you are facing, realize that you may be discussing your most intimate details with this attorney, such as marital problems, finances, family relationships, or business secrets. You must feel comfortable not only in their ability to tackle your legal issues but with their demeanor and sensitivity. Since policies vary among attorneys, when you first call an attorney, inquire if they provide a free consultation. Also in that initial telephone conversation, ask questions about an attorney’s experience, knowledge, and style. If you are able, explain your situation and the result you would like to see, and ask the attorney if she thinks that is a reasonable outcome based on the facts. Keep in mind that attorneys are not fortune teller and are not always able to give you a definite answer, but she should be able to weigh the facts and advise you as to your best-case and worst-case scenarios in your particular situation. Attorney’s fees can vary widely from firm to firm or even within a firm. Also, some attorneys bill by the hour while others bill a flat fee. The hourly rate an attorney charges can be based on geographical considerations, the attorney’s level of experience, the type of matter or various other factors. Another good source of information about attorneys is the internet. Most firms and attorneys have websites where you can review attorney biographies, articles, and firm history. A good deal of information can be gleaned from the attorney’s website. Choosing a lawyer can be the one of the most important decisions you make, so take your time, interview and ask questions. Good luck with choosing the best attorney for you!
