Welcome to My World Where I Create: Gladys and Celia Hanning!

Northwest Woman Magazine (WA) October 2009

Children learn most of their valuable lessons in their homes.  Such early lessons shaping many of the countless attributes and character traits we come to have.  In this respect, I’ve become truly impressed by the bond shared between mothers and daughters.

I must confess I have longed for such a relationship most of my life and therefore, as I’ve witnessed these bonds, I insist it’s a fundamental virtue.  Furthermore, as mothers teach us a grander notion of wisdom, to recognize and respect past and present, we arrive at an initial guiding philosophy of life-- to love.

Every time I meet and spend time with Gladys and Celia Hanning, I witness such an adoring affection.  It’s remarkable.

Gladys Hanning has been doing interior designing for over 20 years in our region.  Her own home is lovely and welcoming.  Its staggering in fact, the numbers of designer inspired spaces we see and probably don't realize carry her initial touch.
Her talents can be seen within Debbie Mumm’s home, Lindemans, and the Tangerine Boutique, to barely scratch the surface.

In 1991, as her children grew and she had devoted years of her life providing a moral compass to her family, Gladys opened Magnolia Tea Room and Antiques, closing in 1994.

I had the distinct pleasure of first meeting Gladys in 1997.  She had opened Wilderness Creek Collections, her second very successful studio.  Anyone who needed to be inspired sought her out.  With each new venture, she did not hesitate to instill a reverence for creativity within her daughter Celia.

Consistently instrumental in her daughter’s aspirations, Celia earned an interior design degree of her own in 2001 crediting her mother for her desire to achieve.

What a fabulous mother she is. “As a child I remember all she did for my sister, brother and me, she's always put us first. Even to this day she is always sacrificing her time and self to help us. Through out the years she has effortlessly taught us to put others first, never compromise our faith in God and be strong independent people. She has always been the first to extend her hand when someone needed help, or to go the extra mile. She is the most loving, beautifully passionate woman that I have ever met. As my eyes become heavy, I must say I have been greatly blessed to have been given the most Fabulous mother in the world.”

In 2000, Gladys opened Junebug Home & Garden and sadly closed the shop shortly after September 11, 2002.  However, continuing with Junebug, she continued providing design work for individuals and regional businesses.

Thus, when the chance came for Gladys and Celia to work together, it seemed like the perfect opportunity, Celia joined her mother in 2002 to re-establish Junebug Furniture and Design.

Although their chemistry together translates beautifully, they each offer a unique artistic perspective.  Observing their showcase is a visual triumph.  Charming, fresh, and extraordinarily stylish, Junebug designs are immediately recognizable and have achieved a vast following.

"Whether we are creating with as-we find-them treasures or transforming our reclaimed finds into one-of-a-kind design objects...we love what we do!  We love to mix vintage treasures with new pieces that in combination create a sense of timelessness and an individual look for our clients." says Gladys.

Junebug designs offer a liveable, practical, and elegant alternative to today’s fast-changing parade of interior trends and glossy show homes.  Comfort, simplicity, and appreciation of the imperfect and a sense of practicality are the key elements of Junebug Furniture and Design.

"Our many years of repurposing furniture have really allowed us to help our clients in good and tough economic times.  It's probably now more important than ever to recycle furniture and other design pieces and turn them into newer updated pieces for our clients' homes and businesses.  We also take pride in the fact we are  considered a "green" design and furniture group-- as we can work with almost any piece and create something that will fit that "perfect" element that our clients are looking for.  Celia and I have forged many wonderful professional and personal relationships throughout the years.”

Gladys and Celia participate in several notable local shows--The Vintage Barn, Funky Junk, The Farm Chicks, Barn House, and The Latah Creek Variety Market.  They could not be more delighted about the fact that they will soon host their own event—the Mad Hatter Vintage Flea Market.
