Got Ghosts? Who You Going to Call? The Ghostbuster Gals

Northwest Woman Magazine (WA) October 2011

It was a dark and dreary winter night. (So, how did you expect a book about Ghosts to start?) The moon had just begun to creep over the horizon, casting eerie shadows on the sidewalk. In the distance, the scream of an ambulance pierced the air, starting the neighborhood dogs howling.

Kirk approached his front door and stopped, key in hand. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he knew lurked inside. "Oh God, what will it do this time? The attacks are escalating. Will I be next? I am so uncomfortable in my own home. I am afraid to live here anymore. This was supposed to be the house of my dreams. Now it’s turning into my worst nightmare." As he stood in the doorway, Kirk felt his heart pounding in his chest, his mouth dry with fear. The dread of merely walking in the front door made him feel sick to his stomach.

Kirk was at the point where he just couldn’t take it anymore. Thank God, help was on the way! This was the only thing that gave him the courage to walk through that door.

It all began just after Kirk bought this century-old house. It was greatly in need of repair, and he was just the man to do it. Putting his energy into fixing it up was something he looked forward to. However, problems surfaced once he started remodeling. Doors would slam upstairs, and the floors would constantly creak. But that was because the house was so old, right? Kirk tried rationalizing the noises away, but he could not figure out why he was always looking up at the top of the stairs, feeling as if someone was watching him. Someone who made his hair stand on end and creeped him out. It seemed so silly since he knew he was the only one in the house. When his girlfriend stayed over, he wondered if she also felt the dreadful energy that emanated down the staircase. Not wanting to say anything to her because she might think he was crazy, he kept his apprehension to himself.

One evening Kirk and his girlfriend were walking into the living room past the dreaded stairwell, when suddenly a door slammed upstairs. He turned to her and sheepishly asked, "Did you hear that?" When she admitted that she did, he was then brave enough to ask her if she ever felt anything unusual when walking past the stairs. What a relief it was to him when she admitted that she never felt comfortable walking past the staircase; in fact, she continued somewhat reluctantly, she didn’t feel comfortable upstairs either. Since she was on a roll, she confessed with embarrassment that when he left for work in the morning, she would scurry out of their bedroom and go sleep on the couch downstairs.

Kirk had mixed feelings when he heard her admission. He was relieved his bizarre suspicions were confirmed. However, if it was also bothering his girlfriend so profoundly, he had to start thinking about what it actually was. He could no longer hide in his denial.

Then it made its presence known so blatantly that there was no doubt this house was truly haunted. One evening while alone in the house, Kirk was upstairs sitting on his bed. The sound of doors slamming broke the quiet, startling him. This time the disturbance was downstairs in the foyer. He took a breath, walked to the stairs, and looked over the railing to double-check the doors he knew he had locked earlier.

A weird, creepy feeling overwhelmed him, as fear consumed Kirk’s body and his adrenalin started pumping. "Is anyone there?" he called out with trepidation. At that precise moment as if in answer to his question, he heard a loud crash in the bathroom. Trembling with apprehension, he went to investigate. As he surveyed the site, he was dumbfounded. Bottles of everything that could not have possibly fallen off the shelves were lying smashed on the floor. "No way could they have fallen on the floor by themselves, there was no way!" As the impossibility of this event went through his head, his next thought was… "I’ve got to get out of here! I just can’t deal with this!"

From the safety of his mother’s house, Kirk thought about his predicament long and hard. He was so used to going to Home Depot for plumbing problems, electrical problems, flooring problems, but he knew that no one at Home Depot would be able to help him fix this problem. So, who ya gonna call? That’s right. Ronnie received a call from Kirk the next morning.

An appointment was set up for the consultation and ghostbusting. There was way more than "one little ghost" that haunted his property. After three hours of clearing, and sending many trapped souls and entities back where they belonged, Kirk could finally feel comfortable and safe in his own home.
